thoughts from a wandering mind

Read me or don't, but here's where the wanderings get put on paper..eh, screen.

The great outdoors

This weekend Ry and I packed up the car, picked up L&M, packed them in along with Lil Trix and headed east. Having only been to Joshua Tree I had no idea what to expect as we headed to a campground M found for us called Heart Bar. When I got there I was blown away. It didn’t look like the northeast, but it didn’t NOT look like the northeast either.

We set up camp— which I must say is much different than when I was a teenager and was lucky enough if I could grab a pillow from my bed and borrow a tent. We had brought everything to make camping comfortable and since we didn’t hike in to our spot, even got to break out our new grill.

The trees were old and tall. They provided much needed shade on a hot sunny day. We took off on an unmarked trail and hiked through a meadow, up a hill, down a hill, all around us a view of mountains and lush green forest.

After the hike, food never tasted so good. M agreed… even the Doritos tasted delicious! It had been quite a long time since I had cheese powder on corn chips. Even a Coors tasted heavenly. The night wasn’t complete without a fire and s’mores. Somehow camping to me is never complete without the latter. The ‘hunt’ for the perfect marshmallow roasting stick along with the technique in which to roast it is something I love experiencing. Ry spent quite some time deep in the woods looking for the right stick which he widdled into a trident so that he could cook 3 at a time (even though he only uses one on each s’more). L would put the marshmallows right into the fire until they caught, blow them out and then they were good to go!

The fact that Ry and I live on a beach but could drive less than 2 hours and end up in the middle of the woods is quite amazing. California is a beautiful state with such variety. No matter where we end up, I’ll be so thankful for our time here.

First real camping trip = success. Next trip - ASAP!
